New York Mayor Highlights Immigrant Role in Football Ahead of World Cup

(MENAFN) New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized the deep connection between immigration and global football on Monday, as the city prepares for the FIFA World Cup 2026, which is set to begin later this week, according to reports.

In a message posted on X, he argued that the sport’s existence and growth are inseparable from immigrant communities, noting that they contribute as players, coaches, stadium workers, and supporters who help create the atmosphere of major tournaments like the World Cup.

He also pointed out that a significant share of the US men’s national team roster includes players with immigrant backgrounds.

At the same time, it was reported that a Somali referee, Omar Abdulkadir Artan, was denied entry to the United States over the weekend, preventing him from taking part in the upcoming tournament.

Separately, reports indicated that US authorities under President Donald Trump have prepared plans to increase Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence in New York City as part of a broader immigration enforcement push.

Amid these developments, Mamdani warned against measures that could create fear within immigrant communities.

“Soccer would not exist without immigrants. Immigrants play and coach the game, work in the stadiums, fill the stands, and make celebrations like the World Cup possible,” Mamdani wrote on US social media company X.

He further added: “We will not allow ICE or anyone else to sow fear in our communities — especially at this moment,” Mamdani wrote on X. “As the world comes to our city, we will stand proudly with our immigrant neighbors and reject these attacks for what they are: an attempt to divide us.”
